OPENING MESSAGE

Hello Card  -  Volume 0  -  John Card Number 0  -  Fri, July 1, 1988 8:29 PM

This is card number zero, volume number zero: the very first of what I hope will be a long, long line of voice cards. In fact, my goal is to preside over the creation of ONE THOUSAND VOLUMES of voice cards; I figure that if we all pitch in and keep churning out cards on a regular basis, we can reach volume 1000 by the year 2030. What I am trying to do here is to start a conversation that will last forty years!

In order to demonstrate the linking between multiple volumes of voice cards, the inaugural issue of Archipelago contains both volume 0 and volume 1. Volume 1 includes a brief description of each member and a set of the first TRUE voice cards, that is, cards which ask a question or make a suggestion and which have some hope of generating a response. When volume 2 comes out (in the second issue of Archipelago) all ten members will be able to add their voices to the fray and the fun will really begin!

THIS volume, volume 0, will (I hope) lay the foundation for all this by explaining what voice cards are and how they work. Each of the succeeding cards illuminates a different part of the overall picture and together they provide a brief and painless introduction to the process of speaking through cards. Some of the cards contain links to cards in volume 1.

A final note: THIS STUFF IS EASY! Although the cards may appear strange and confusing at first, they are really very simple and I think you will soon become used to them. When it comes time for you to create your first card, please don't feel that you have to be profound. Voice cards are designed to promote CASUAL conversation! Let your participles dangle! Spell words any way you please! Type the first thing that comes into your head and don't look back!

A REALLY final note: I accept the remote possibility that this program may not be perfect the first time out of the chute. After all, this whole Archipelago thing is one big experiment. So if there are any explosions, strange odors, or unpleasant surprises, or if you have any suggestions whatsoever, SEND ME A CARD!
