Robert and I spent a week together on the coast of Texas chasing birds last month, and I returned home as depressed as hell. The problem was not that I didn't enjoy my vacation; quite the contrary. Robert is always a wonderful host, and my first experience with birdwatching was great fun.
I think the problem was the contrast between vacation and work, and the suddenness of the transition. Sunday afternoon we were chasing birds in the Texas countryside; Monday morning I was in a suit and tie in front of customers, smiling and talking about client-server computing.
The good news, maybe, is that I won't get a real vacation again till next June.
