Last week I finally got to see the film version of the "Last Temptation of Christ." It was showing at a small fine arts theatre in Helena and I had to cross a picket line of fundamentalists to get it (in fact I wouldn't have heard about the film except that the protesters made the local news).
The protesters plastered the entrance with misspelled biblical quotations about the nasty things that happen to blasphemers and handed out leaflets prepared at a headquarters in Arizona. The leaflet informed me that I was risking my eternal soul by seeing this horrible film, and that they KNEW it was horrible because they had been told so by "a reliable witness." So apparently none of the protesters had seen the film, and I am certain none of them had read the book. I estimate that the twenty or so protesters managed to attract several hundred heathens who would not have otherwise seen the film.
The film itself was definitely NOT a Walt Disney production, but it was as powerful and thought-provoking as the book (see my review in the Book Reviews stack). I reccomend it. Incidentally, Sting makes a superb cameo appearance as Pontius Pilate.
