This certainly sounds like a pesky problem! Did you ever try the experiment I suggested in the last issue?
This bad block on your hard disk certainly could be the cause if it happened to be in just the wrong place. Does your Nova manual tell you anything about dealing with bad blocks? The software that came with my Jasmine drive automatically removes bad blocks from service whenever they appear (so far none has appeared on my drive). Doing a full backup and reformat is certainly a pain, but I wouldn't think there would be any danger of losing your drive, and it *MIGHT* help.
Incidentally, when you try other system files, do you replace the entire file, or do you use Installer? I haven't had much luck with that miserable Installer program; I recommend a complete replacement (you'll have to transfer fonts, desk accessories, etc. so keep a copy of the original system file). Do you think it's possible that you could have somehow deleted an obscure system resource when playing with ResEdit?
We'll see what Robert has to say. Keep me posted!
