This is the time of year when traditionally I feel guilty for not spending my weekends hiking and backpacking. I claim to be an avid backpacker - but somehow I never seem to get out more than once or twice a year.
It's a little early to say for sure, but this year may be different. My second trip of the year is scheduled for the upcoming weekend; a third trip is tentatively scheduled for the following weekend. The planned locales: the Frank Church/River of No Return wilderness area in Idaho, and the Zion Narrows in Utah.
Some of you may be surprised to learn that I was introduced to backpacking many years ago by John (I think he has retired from this sport in more recent years). I still have fond memories of those early trips - one also including Roger. One favorite iconoclastic memory: sitting around the campfire with a young foreigner we met on the trail, John's father quizzing this poor fellow at some length as to John's chances of getting a date in England.
What do the other Archipelago members then present recollect of this?
