This is ONE OF 2 responses to VC 18 Robert 7 ("Gift Card Archive???¿¿¿")...

Robert:

You are not the only member who was confused by the gift and wizard buttons on the main monopoly board screen. This is not actually a bug, but rather a side effect of the continuous construction going on as part of the Archipelago 2.0 project.

What happened was that when it came time to launch the last issue, I had these two archive buttons on the main board all wired up, but the archive stacks themselves were not yet ready for release. HOWEVER, I have now finished both stacks and they are now ready for business.

The Gift Card Archive stack is a collection of all the gift cards attached to all the gifts we have given each other since Archipelago began (over a hundred and counting). I have reworked all of these cards into the new format. Like the Book Review Archive, this stack can be searched and sorted in various ways.

If any of you would like to maintain an up-to-date record of all gifts given (useful if you're not sure whether or not something has already been contributed), all you have to do is zip through all the gift cards each issue (use the hand buttons) and press their Export buttons. Since gift cards are now included in voice volumes you don't have to worry about them disappearing; if you neglect the archive for several issues you can always go back later to gather the cards. Most of you will probably get by just fine without this archive, but it's always there if you want it.

The other new stack is the Mr. Wizard Archive. This is a collection of all the Mr. Wizard columns rendered in the new format. Each card has a "PUSH ME" button that jumps to the stack in question. This will make it easy to hop from stack to stack during your next rainy afternoon. If anyone is interested I will eventually re-release the old wizard stacks with the new standard wizard buttons soddered in place.

As with the gift archive, it will be up to you to maintain your collection of wizard cards (or not). Just push the EXPORT button to add each new wizard card to your collection. You can hop to these nifty new archives at any time by one of three methods:

  1. Go to any gift or wizard card in its original voice volume and push the button on the leftmost of the three gray boxes beneath the text field. On gift cards the button looks like a stack wrapped up in a bow, on wizard cards the button says "Mr. WIZARD!"
  2. Go to the main monopoly board and press the archive button in the bottom part of the screen. These are the buttons that gave Robert so much trouble last time.
  3. Of course you can always enter these archive stacks DIRECTLY through the outside world by double clicking on their icons from the finder.
See next card for more comments on gift giving...
