I know I'm going to sound like some kind of cub scout, but please don't give up on the ole ballot box. I grew up in a political family and got to see a lot of politicians behind the scenes. Yes, some of them are sleazy or insane or inept or hopelessly mediocre. But many of them really care and are doing their best to make things better. It often happens that a truly great candidate will be pitted against a paranoid moron, and the moron will win because so many people find it easier to throw up their arms in disgust than get invovled.

A classic example of this phenomenon is the disastrous reign of Ronald Raygun. He rose to power amidst a sleepy electorate and then dozed on the job for eight years. We are all now paying the price: and that may well include a tragic war that might have been avoided, a run-away deficit, and, (your favorite issue), a neglected environment.

If you REALLY care about the environment, I suggest you grit your teeth, hold your nose, and take the plunge into the real world of politics. At least vote!
