I, too, am frustrated by the difficulty of learning how to work with the toolbox. And no, I don't know of good texts using other languages such as Pascal.

Most of what I have learned comes from Using the Macintosh Toolbox with C, by Huxham, Burnard, and Takatsuka. I understand they have recently published a Volume II; this should be worth looking into.
