I am highly amused by John's image of a "canon factory" (re: Help Manual section on the Royal Society of Ponarvians). Anybody else catch this?
But a quick scanning of the trusty old OED reveals at least two "outs" for our intrepid moderator. A canon can be:
A surgeon's instrument for the sewing up of wounds,
or:
A metal loop, or "ear" at the top of a bell, by which it is hung.
