All that Jazz!

Voice Card  -  Volume 32  -  Drury Card Number 2  -  Mon, May 30, 1994 12:20 PM

Should anyone ever consider visiting the great capital of California, may I suggest you time it during Memorial weekend. Sacramento hosts a fantastic Jazz Jubilee.

The event has been a happenin' thing for twenty-one years now. It attracts jazz groups from the world over. This year there were almost 900 musicians and for the first time several Sacramento Blues bands participated.

Some of the groups are: The Commanders (US Air Force band), Devil Mountain Jazz Band, Great Pacific Jazz Band (headed by Molly Ringwald's dad), Igor's Jazz Cowboys (standing room only at their performances), and the Zydeco Flames.

It is a three and a half day event. The performances are staged in Old Sacramento (along the river front and among the many little shoppes), the Convention Center, CalExpo fairgrounds, and various large hotels. You can catch buses to any of the areas.

John and I have gone to listen for the past three or four years now. There is plenty of junk food and drinks at each location. You can sit and listen for as long as you wish and then wander off to another group. Some areas are large enough to support dance floors for those so inclined.

If you like jazz, this is the event to hear!
