This is ONE OF 2 responses to volume 2, John Card Number 29 ("Grading Program")...
See response to volume 2, Stuart Card Number 5 ("grading program response") it might give you some ideas...
In addition,
In spite of being a HyperCard fan, I get extremely annoyed and frustrated by two of its major drawbacks: the fact that you can only view ONE CARD AT A TIME and that you CANNOT SCROLL HORIZONTALLY!!!!!!!
The only way around the first problem, that I can think of, is scripting a button that'll create a new background with one screen size scrolling field and that'll copy the pertinent data from each student card into each line of this crolling field...
It would have to update this new background (manually or automatically) at the end of each session or triggered by the Mac's clock...
There's no way around the second problem, except creating separate backgrounds to show separate chunks of data, but that's not what I want!
There you go, John, write an XFCN (?) that'll add Horizontal Scrolling to an existing field, preferably to a (vertical) scrolling field, or that'll create a NEW window definition option (V & H scroll)!
If these problems can't be solved, you're better off with any commercial database.
By the way any one of the commercial databases will solve the other major drawback of HyperCard - its poor and INFLEXIBLE printing and/or report generating capability.
Oh, well... it's 2:21 a.m. and the dense fog that has come down over S.L.C. which doesn't even allow me to see across the street... might also be blocking my view of this subject.
Merry Christmas,
