This is an atlas of the revised starmap. Like the original atlas it allows you to find the location of a pattern number, find the pattern associated with a given location, or travel through the revised starmap using a panel of navigation buttons in each section.

I created the original starmap in 1987 largely through a process of trail and error. I tried many different configurations of pipes and orientations before finding a design that worked. As a result, I was not immediately interested in pursuing other designs and instead set to work exploring the maze with the map I had.

As time passed, though, I began to wonder about the original map. In particular, I wondered about the peculiar way some of the pipes zig-zagged back and forth, both within each microcosm, and between microcosms. It was a distinctive and beautiful pattern, but it didn't make sense. The starmaze is built on the edges of a hypercube, so should be extremely simple. The pipes should have formed a simple grid of horizontal and vertical pipes wrapping only around the edges to form a torus. Instead, the torus was strangely twisted - and at first I didn't understand why.

Eventually, though, I realized that the arrangement of pipes, and the orientation map (which I had arrived at independently) were intimately related. A change in the pipe arrangement could be compensated for by changing the orientation map, and vice versa. In creating the original map, I had stumbled on an arbitrarily wrinkled version of the pipe structure and a version of the orientation map that compensated for it. Once I understood this, I knew that I could smooth out the wrinkle by simply changing the orientation map to compensate, resulting in simpler, cleaner map.

For most purposes, this arbitrary wrinkle does no harm and, indeed, I still prefer the original map most of the time. But for basic starmaze research, which often involves plotting subsets of patterns on the map using the Starmaze Explorer, the wrinkle adds an unnecessary complication. For this reason, in 1998, I created a revised version of the map, and a revised atlas to go with it.

The differences between the original and revised maps are subtle, but significant. Consider, for example, these two maps of the same set of 96 patterns which comprise rooms involved in one or more solution paths. The first screenshot is from the revised map, the second from the original:

You can spot the differences in three places on the screen. First, you see immediately that the arrangement of pipes is cleaner and simpler in the revised map. Within the map itself, notice that some of the black room triangles present in the first map are absent in the second and vice versa. The revised map has a more symmetrical distriubtion; the original map has a few scattered rooms here and there that are an artifact of the "wrinkle in the pipes".

If you then look at the atlas itself (the scrolling list in the lower left corner), you will notice that two of the rooms visible in these screenshots, 001 and 004, have different locations. Room 001 was originally at location +Fj, but moves to +Hb in the revised map. Similarly, room 004 moves from +Ne to +Pe. Both of these rooms originally resided in rooms connected by twisted macropipes.

Finally, if you look closely at pattern 484 displayed in the center of the screen, you may notice that the tiny arrows inside the east and west yang cells are reversed between the two screens. These are orientation arrows that indicate the actual direction traveled when exiting room 484. The micropipe associated with the east yang cell of room 484 in the revised map opens on the northeast edge of the room diamond. The same pipe leaves from the southwest edge in the original map.

In this revised atlas, then, you will find that the close-ups of each microcosm display the simpler wrinkle-free pipe structure and the rooms listed to the left of each microcosm and in the index at the bottom of the page differ from the rooms listed in the original atlas. The navigation arrows at the top right of each section also behave differently; moving east or west between microcosms will always carry you directly east west, never also north or south as sometimes happens in the original map.
